It’s very important to remember that how much the lender will give you based on your income and credit score might really be more than you can actually afford, depending on your spending habits. Even if you don’t have a lot of debt on your credit report that doesn’t mean that you don’t spend a lot of money.

You may eat lunch out every day, buy expensive things, and generally not keep much in the bank. Adding a large car payment (and probably a high insurance premium) to that can be a serious recipe for a big disaster. You want to avoid that, and the best way to do so is to be certain what you are comfortably capable of spending and then stick to it.

Do your research online first. Know what cars are in your price range and what interest rate you’re likely to get based on your credit. When you’re aware of these factors you’re more likely to be careful about how much you spend and what you’re willing to pay.
